Dynamics NAV
is now Business Central

Microsoft has rebranded its largest ERP system—Dynamics NAV—to Business Central. With more functionality than ever, NAV customers can leverage the powerful ERP they know and love on the cloud with Microsoft’s most advanced technology yet.

So, what’s next for businesses using NAV?

We’ve specialized in offering Dynamics NAV to our clients for over 20 years, and these are the three options we recommend:

  • Upgrade Dynamics NAV to Business Central and take advantage of new, advanced ERP functionality, OR

  • Stay on Dynamics NAV and move it to Azure Cloud hosting, OR

  • Continue to use the Dynamics NAV functionality until you are ready for a full system upgrade

How do I decide if my business should make the move to Azure or Business Central?

Migrating to Azure

Now you can migrate your existing Dynamics NAV (Navision) to the Microsoft Azure Cloud without upgrading to Business Central! This gives your organization the opportunity to get the advantages of Dynamics NAV in the cloud without being forced to upgrade to the new Business Central extensions model.

When you migrate to NAV on Azure you get:

  • Fast, efficient access to NAV anywhere, anytime, without requiring a VPN

  • No need for internal IT support—free up your IT to work on other value-added projects

  • Advanced integration capabilities to other cloud and on premise applications

  • Fully scalable to expand as your company grows

  • Reduced costs from not needing to maintain and manage your own NAV servers

  • More efficient, cost-effective future upgrades with Syvantis’ Azure upgrade tools

Upgrading to Business Central

Technically, NAV 2018 and previous versions are still called Dynamics NAV. But as of April 2019, Microsoft stopped selling Dynamics NAV to new customers, and all future releases fall under the Business Central designation.

But this is more than just branding. Business Central leverages new cloud technologies to provide a more modern ERP application. With all of the new features and functionality, transitioning to Business Central will require greater effort than a standard NAV upgrade.

Most existing Dynamics NAV customers have customized their systems with modifications. Unlike NAV, Business Central uses a different, more cloud-compatible development platform for customizations and integrations. This means that in order to upgrade to Business Central, your partner will need to redevelop your modifications onto the new platform using new customization tools called Extensions. For some customers the move to extensions may be relatively straightforward, but for others this change requires a detailed evaluation of which mods should be upgraded and which should not.

At Syvantis, our developers have been working with NAV for over 20 years. They know exactly what needs to be done to upgrade from any version of Dynamics NAV to Business Central and can help you navigate the transition.
