Analysis mode is a Business Central feature that helps users explore and analyze data directly within list pages. It allows users to rearrange columns, filter data, create saved views, and build pivot-style analyses without impacting the underlying data. Because all analysis takes place within the list itself, users can quickly gain insights without exporting data or opening additional applications.
Enabling analysis mode
To use analysis mode:
- Open a list page in Business Central.
- Select the Analyze toggle.
When enabled, the list page changes to an analysis-focused view with enhanced filtering and customization options. Key changes include:
- FactBoxes are temporarily hidden.
- Navigation actions such as creating new records are hidden.
- Analysis tools and filters become available.
- Users can return to the standard view at any time by turning Analysis Mode off.
For organizations running Business Central version 23.0 or later, analysis mode is enabled by default.
Understanding the analysis workspace
Analysis mode includes several key areas:
- Data columns and rows
- Analysis filters
- Summary bar
- Analysis tabs
These tools work together to help users organize and review data in different ways.
Working with columns
Users can adjust how information is displayed by:
- Reordering columns
- Showing or hiding fields
- Pinning columns to the left or right side of the page
- Sorting data ascending or descending
- Applying filters directly to individual columns
Additional columns can be added through the Columns pane, making it easy to create views tailored to specific business needs.
Using the summary bar
At the bottom of the analysis mode window is the summary bar. When users select rows, the summary bar displays:
- Total number of rows
- Filtered rows
- Selected rows
- Average values
- Minimum values
- Maximum values
- Totals and sums
These calculations update automatically as selections change.
Applying analysis filters
Analysis filters function similarly to standard list filters but are specific to each analysis tab. Users can:
- Filter by individual fields
- Include or exclude specific values
- Create specialized views for different purposes
Because filters are saved with the tab, users can quickly return to frequently used analyses.
Creating and saving analysis tabs
Analysis mode allows users to create multiple saved tabs. Each tab can have its own:
- Name
- Columns
- Filters
- Data arrangement
Example uses include:
- My Customers
- Recently Added Vendors
- Open Accounts
- Department-Specific Views
Tabs are automatically saved and remain available until manually removed.
Exporting data
Users can export analyzed data directly from analysis mode. Available options include:
This makes it easy to share data or perform additional analysis outside Business Central.
Using pivot mode
Analysis mode also includes pivot mode, which works similarly to Excel pivot tables. Pivot mode allows users to organize data into:
- Row groups
- Column labels
- Values
For example, vendors can be grouped and analyzed by payment terms code, creating categorized views that summarize information across multiple records. This functionality provides a powerful method for reviewing large data sets without building custom reports.
Key takeaways
Analysis mode helps users:
- Analyze live Business Central data
- Create customized list views
- Save frequently used analyses
- Review summary statistics instantly
