Maximize performance in Dynamics 365 Business Central with these helpful tips

Dynamics 365 Business Central is a cloud-based ERP application with users accessing the system from a variety of web browsers and devices. Users of cloud-based applications like Dynamics 365 benefit from being able to access the system from anywhere with an internet connection – even on the go from their mobile device. Like any system, there are tips and tricks for users that make their experience a positive one. In this blog we’ll cover various performance to ensure the end-user experience in Dynamics 365 Business Central is consistent and effective.

Browsers

There are multiple supported browsers for Dynamics 365 Business Central. Most browsers will be able to launch Business Central, but Microsoft guarantees that the user experience is best on Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (on macOS). If a user is experiencing issues using Business Central on any of these browsers, they may be running an older version of the browser. The first step to troubleshooting a performance issue in Business Central is to make sure the browser is up-to-date. Microsoft recently announced that Internet Explorer will be no longer supported on August 17, 2021. This means organizations that use Internet Explorer 11 for any Microsoft applications like Microsoft 365 or Dynamics 365 should transition operations to a supported browser like Microsoft Edge.

Some browsers support page caching in Business Central better than others. For fully supported browsers, the overall structure of a page is cached on the client device when a page is accessed for the first time. The next time the user accesses that page, the layout of the page will display immediately.

Performance tips

Page loading times are determined by the number of controls on the page. A page with an overwhelming amount of tables and content may longer to load than expected especially if the browser does not support page caching. To improve performance on complex pages, users may want to collapse secondary content that are not used very often. For example, the FactBox pane on a Business Central page can be collapsed to speed up page processing time. Users can also hide content entirely. Irrelevant table columns can be removed to speed up the loading time of a page as well. Both collapsing and hiding page elements can be done with personalization settings in Business Central.

There are also small actions Business Central users can take to speed up their work time in Business Central. Features like keyboard shortcuts and quick data entry increase efficiency when navigating the system and entering data. With quick data entry, users can choose specific fields that are included in navigation when the enter key is clicked.
